Gareth Decker’s journey in the world of fishing traces back to his upbringing in Kei Mouth, Eastern Cape, where he shared countless memorable moments casting lines with his father. A true seafarer at heart, Gareth earned his skipper’s credentials at the tender age of 17 through the East London Ski Boat Club. For years, he honed his skills in surf launching and fishing across the Eastern Cape, Transkei, Natal, and Mozambique.
Two decades ago, Gareth made a coastal migration to Cape Town, and ever since, he has been a dedicated pursuer of Yellow Tail, Snoek, Tuna, and Marlin – a pursuit that has taken him to renowned spots like Struisbaai, Alphard Banks, and the Cape Canyon. The sea, to Gareth, is more than a backdrop; it’s his passion, his sanctuary, his realm. With enthusiasm as boundless as the ocean, Gareth delights in introducing his clients to his sea-bound office, regaling them with stories of lighthouses, hidden reefs, and the intricate beauty of our coastline. He imparts his wisdom about marine life, fish species, and his own captivating fishing exploits. Learning under the tutelage of such a seasoned expert is an opportunity like no other – a chance to absorb a wealth of knowledge.
Gareth’s influence extends beyond his own pursuits, as he’s also nurtured his wife’s passion for deep-sea fishing. Guiding her along the way, he played an instrumental role in her achieving her skipper’s certification. Together, they’ve forged a partnership that echoes Gareth’s dedication and love for the ocean.
Every charter embarked upon holds its own unique story, an unfolding narrative painted by the ever-changing seascape. Gareth understands this intimately, reminding us to embrace each outing and relish the invigorating embrace of the open air. Amidst his treasure trove of fishing tales, one memory stands out: the exhilaration of hooking a formidable 102kg Yellow Fin Tuna using a Popper lure, etching an indelible mark in Gareth’s fishing chronicles.
